Markdown available
August 15th, 2011 by Craig
I’ve just updated the website making Markdown syntax available on the description and notes fields. Markdown is a simple syntax that allows for text formatting without having to use HTML tags. For example:
This text is *emphasized*
produces
This text is emphasized
The full syntax is available from http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax
Please report any issues and have fun!

Excel Export
November 25th, 2010 by Craig
I’ve just updated the Export to Excel feature to include the ‘Closed Date’ for invoices. Should be easier to filter your invoices in Excel by that date now.

Improved filtering and more…
November 19th, 2010 by Craig
A number of subscribers have requested a client filter when searching through their invoices – this has now gone live on the site. Also, a few more changes have been made live today which address an issue some users had with the invoice creation page.
Generally, the website has been optimised a little more too, so you should find it pretty speedy!
For my American users – Happy Black Friday!

Domain Name Issues
August 29th, 2010 by Craig
I have experienced a problem in the last couple of days with the Simplybill.com domain name not correctly working. I am pleased to say this has now been corrected and full access has now been restored. I’m sorry for any inconvenience if you have tried to send an invoice in the last couple of days.

Minor updates
June 2nd, 2010 by Craig
Just wanted to post about a couple of changes that have just gone live. The first one was a problem with editing previously created service invoices – updates to the description weren’t updating properly. This has now been fixed.
The second update came about because a subscriber got in touch to ask about their billing period. He wanted to know when his billing period was, and it made me realise that it’s not obvious when your billing cycle will reset. Therefore, I have just updated Simplybill to indicate how many days you have until your next billing period. This should make it much easier to manage the number of invoices you have available in your plan.

First Edition Now Live
April 27th, 2010 by Craig
I’m really pleased to have the first addition to the Editions series now live. Editions are variations on the standard invoice that can be used to create more distinctive invoices for you and your clients. The first of these is the Photo Edition. It is available to choose from the “New Invoice” page.
It simply allows for the inclusion of an image on an invoice-by-invoice basis. Here’s how it compares to a standard invoice:

Standard and Photo Edition Invoices
It will probably be of most use to the many photographers who use Simplybill, but anyone can use it to add an image to their invoice. It would be great to hear any feedback on this new Edition.
I plan to add many more Editions in the coming months – if you have an idea for an Edition, I’ll be glad to hear of it.

I love my users!
April 21st, 2010 by Craig
That may seem a little over the top – let me explain.
I get a lot of emails from Simplybill users. They ask questions about plans and features – the typical support queries for a web service. Which is fine – that’s what I’m here for. But recently, a number of subscribers have been getting in touch with lots of ideas.. they are the ones who use Simplybill regularly and can see opportunities for improvement and ways to make it more efficient. I love these ideas, because they really make sense. They are from people on the front-line of invoicing who need to accomplish something. They use Simplybill, and enjoy using it, and just want to make it even better.
From my perspective it’s just great. I get rational arguments for change and improvements which really help me map out the future of Simplybill. I have a lot of ideas myself, but these ones really do count. So, keep ‘em coming guys and thanks!

Rework – by 37signals
April 12th, 2010 by Craig
I’ve just finished reading Rework – an ideas and strategy book by the founders of 37signals. It’s a great book for getting motivated to get on with building whatever it is you want to build, and ignoring (or at least minimising) the things that get in the way of you doing that.
It was really interesting to realise that their strategy (which is to keep things small and simple, and not bloat out your product/company/staff) is aligned exactly with mine. Simplybill is fairly simple – it does the main job (which is sending invoices) well, and adds a few other things that make that task easier, but doesn’t overcomplicate it with more features that people won’t use. And as it’s run by me – and not a corporation solely interested in keeping shareholders happy, I can keep the price low and keep developing it without worrying about ROI and other business buzzwords!
So, whilst I didn’t really learn anything new, it was good to read and get re-focussed on the core of Simplybill – which is sending and tracking invoices and making that task quick and easy for as many people as possible.
If you’re a small business, or a freelancer, with an idea for a product or service, it’s well worth the read.
